Betting Odds: San Jose State (-1) / Over/Under (145)
Pick: San Jose State (-1)
Friday night brings us two Mountain West teams headed in different directions and sitting next to each other in the standings, when the New Mexico Lobos head into San Jose State's Provident Credit Union Event Center to take on the Spartans.
Richard Patino has managed to complete a full 180 for the Lobos since taking over the judge at the beginning of last season. After finishing the regular season with an abysmal 13-19 record last year, he has managed to flip the script, with the Lobos currently sitting with an impressive 19-7 record. Despite this, they are struggling mightily of late. Having lost their last 4 games straight up and having not covered in the last 5 games overall, they have fallen down the Mountain West rankings to the 6th seed, sitting one game behind the Spartans who they will face off against on Friday night. Leading scorer, Jamal Mashburn Jr., is a true bucket getter. Currently averaging 19.8 PPG, good for 26th in the country, the Junior guard from Miami, Florida can take over the game at any point. If they are to turn their season around, they will have to get back to their form that they possessed early in the season, when they were putting up 80+ points on the regular per game.

San Jose State's season was looking awfully bleak by the minute not only two weeks ago. But, with 4 wins in their last 6 games in Conference play, they have been able to successfully resurect their season, now sitting in the 5th seed in the MW standings. This matchup against the Lobos at home will be a true test to see if they have officially made a turnaround, as a win could really boost their spirits and push them to want greater things from this season. Although they do not possess the potent offense that New Mexico has the ability to unleash at any moment, they are the far superior team on the defensive side of the ball... something they will surely benefit from having at home as they welcome New Mexico on Friday. As I previously mentioned, Patino has done a great job in turning the tables with his New Mexico bunch, but the job Tim Miles has done with the Spartans may even be more impressive. After finishing with an 8-23 record last year and only managing to win 1 game in Conference play, he has his squad at a 16-10 this year, a far more respectable campaign for sure.
Betting trends to consider in this matchup:
- The Spartans are 9-0 ATS when playing on equal rest as the opposing team
- San Jose State is 17-8 ATS this year
- New Mexico is 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games played
This is truly a matchup between two teams headed in completely different directions as the year comes to a close. San Jose State is on a good run of late and they have a chance to make a statement to the rest of the Mountain West Conference that they are ready to make some noise come Conference Tournament time. They do it here on Friday night behind a stellar defensive outing and put the league on notice. Give me the Spartans by at least a bucket.
