Tuesday night brings us the first game of the season between two NL East rivals, when the Philadelphia Phillies head into Flushing to take on the New York Mets.
Philadelphia is playing extremely unpredictable at the moment, going on extended win and loss streaks back-to-back on a consistent basis. Coming into this series against the Mets, they sit with a mediocre 25-28 record, good for 7.0 games out of first place in the NL East standings. They will not be stressed out yet though as at about this time last year was when they were able to get a spark after firing their manager and replacing him with Rob Thomson. On the mound for them for Tuesday's game will be Ranger Suarez. He has only appeared in three games so far this season after battling back from an injury for the first part of the year. Across the 11.0 innings he has pitched, he has looked very rusty, letting up 12 runs across those innings. With the Phillies struggling to get quality innings out of a few of their key arms to begin the campaign, they will hope that Suarez can get back to his old ways in order to sure up the rotation. Can he get back on the right track against the Mets?

Similar to the Phillies, the Mets have not begun the season in the brightest of ways. With a .500 record after the first 54 games, they will need to improve as soon as possible if they have hopes in staying within reach of the Braves atop the East. After winning five games in a row last week against the Rays and Guardians, they have lost four out of there last six games and seem to not be able to build any monentum whatsoever. In spite of all the negative talk though, there is still over 100 games to get it right and that can get kickstarted if they are able to take this series from their rivals. On the bump, the Mets will have Kodai Senga go for them. He has struggled in the last month or so, but the way he is able to battle and not let things get too far out of hand is one of his most impressive traits. In his first nine games started since signing with the Mets, he has only allowed 5+ runs one time, which has allowed New York to stay in almost every game that he has started in the first two months of baseball. Can he deliver a memorable performance against the Phillies in his first game against them?
Betting trends to consider in this matchup:
- New York is 6-1 when playing on one day of rest
- The over is 4-2-1 in division games for the Phillies
- Philadelphia is 5-13 as an away underdog
Looking at both starting pitchers, there is a large discrepancy in their ERA's. Nevertheless, Suarez is one of the calmest pitchers in the league, and I have full trust in him getting back to his normal self against the Mets in the first game of this crucial series. I fully expect this to be played tight all night long and for this number to not even get close to going over. Give me the under in Flushing!
