Game Info: Tuesday, August 29th, 2023 at 6:40 p.m. EST (Loan Depot Park)
Betting Odds: Rays ML (-105) - Over/Under (7.5)
Pick: Rays ML (-105)
Tuesday night takes us to Loan Depot Park where the Tampa Bay Rays open up a series and they will take on the Miami Marlins here in this one. One of these teams has a clear playoff team, and the other one is still competing for a playoff spot in the National League. Both of them are looking to gain ground in their respective divisional title races as well and they should provide us with a solid matchup here on Tuesday night to open up the series.
The Tampa Bay Rays have been one of the best teams in all of major league baseball this season, and they will be looking to regain first place in the American League East division, coming down the final stretch of the year as well. It would be a massive step in the right direction if they could pick up a victory in the opening game of this quick to game series against the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night on the road in South Beach. Tampa Bay is currently less than three games out of first place behind Baltimore coming into the opening game of the series and they are currently occupying the top spot in the American League wildcard race as well, as they have built up a six game margin for themselves, heading into the final month of the season.
Tampa Bay comes into this game with 80 victories in their first 132 games of the 2023 Major League Baseball season. They had a historic start to the year and remained undefeated for the first couple weeks of the year but they have been tailing off since coming out of the All-Star break. However, at the moment they are starting to get things back together, as they’ve won eight out of their last ten games of the season, and they come into the opening game of the series on a two game winning streak as well. They will be looking to pick up their third consecutive victory here on Tuesday night against the Miami Marlins, and continue to track down Baltimore to get back into first place in the American League East division.

The Miami Marlins had a successful first half of the season, but coming out of the All-Star break they looked like an absolute train wreck. They have since recovered, but they still have a long way to go if they want to make up the ground that they lost and get back into the race for the top three wild card spots in the National League coming down the final month of the year. Miami will send Sandy Alcantara to the mound, and in previous years that is something that would probably strike fear into opposing teams. However, since the implementation of the pitch clock, he has struggled this season, and it doesn’t help matters that he is going against one of the best lineups in all of baseball this year as well.
Miami comes into this game in third place of the National League East division. They are currently on a one game winning streak, but they will have to turn things around quickly as they have lost seven out of their last 10 games on the season. They are barely hovering around .500 at the moment as they come into this game with 66 victories in their first 131 games of the 2023 Major League Baseball season. This is a battle of the sunshine state that can arguably go either way, and the starting pitching matchup provides us with one of the best games of the evening as both teams will have quality starting pitchers, taking the mound in this one. As previously mentioned, Sandy Alcantara gets the baseball for Miami while, Aaron Civale gets to start for Tampa Bay.
Betting trends to consider in this matchup:
- Tampa Bay is 48-31 after a win
- Miami is 30-35 after a loss
- Tampa Bay is 10-3 after a day off
I expect Tampa Bay to pick up the victory in the opening game of this series against the Miami Marlins. Tampa Bay carries all of the momentum coming into this game and with how bad Sandy Alcantara has struggled this season, I don’t look for him to do well against a lineup as lethal as the Rays. That is why I look for Tampa Bay to grab a comfortable victory in the opening game of the series on Tuesday night.
