Game Info: Monday, May 15, 2023 at 9:45 p.m. EST (Oracle Park)
Betting Odds: Giants (-120) / Over/Under (9)
Pick: Phillies ML (+100)
Let's head into the new week with some MLB action as the Philadelphia Phillies travel into Oracle Park to face off with the San Francisco Giants.
After spurring together a 5-game win streak to put them 1 game above the .500 mark, the Phillies dropped their last game of the series to the Colorado Rockies by a score of 4-0 to put them at 20-20 on the young season. The loss was not the talking point after the game though, it was about Bryce Harper, his ejection, and the Phillies and Rockies clearing the dugout after an altercation with Rockies Reliever Jake Bird. Staying in the NL West for this series, the Phillies will come into this one with confidence that they can register another series win against a team that is far inferior in talent to them. If they are to jump in front and secure the first win of the series, the Phillies will need SP Bailey Falter to find his groove. He has only appeared in 6 games this season, and in 5 of them he was hit with a loss. Even though a loss for a pitcher doesn't always completely come down to them, he has not shown any promising signs of late to suggest that he is feeling right as of now. Nevertheless, can he turn it around against the Giants?

San Francisco is slumping heavily on offense over their past few games. After registering a key win over the Diamondbacks in Arizona a few nights ago in the 1st game of the series, they were only able to muster together 8 runs for the rest of the series, falling short in all of them. Now, they will throw veteran Alex Wood on the bump to compete against the vaunted Phillies lineup that has power from 1-9. He has only pitched 11.0 innings so far this season throughout the span of 4 games, but has been able to put together a stellar 2.45 ERA over that span. With the likes of Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, Nick Castellanos, J.T. Realmuto and more coming into town, the Giants will hope that he can rise to the occasion to get back on the right track. On offense, San Francisco is just not getting enough production from Michael Conforto to warrant him staying at the top of the order for much longer. Despite the fact that he does have 7 home runs throughout his first 119 at bats, he is only batting .193 average-wise. If the Giants are to go on a run and turn their season around, he is going to need to turn things around as soon as possible.
Betting trends to consider in this matchup:
- The under is 22-17-1 in Phillies games so far this year
- The under is 5-1 in the last 6 Phillies games
- San Francisco is 5-12 SU when playing as the favorite
As the line suggests, this should be a close affair on Monday night. But, Falter is due for some positive regression soon and I expect for that to begin tonight. Wood is a solid starter, but he does not come at you with any blazing speed or insane movement for the majority of his pitches, so do not anticipate the Phillies being fooled by much. For sure, they did get shut out yesterday in Colorado which isn't the greatest sign, but I love the way their lineup is constructed with Harper back. Give me the Phillies as the short underdog to steal the first game of the series on the road!
