As we head into the new week, lets head to The City of Brotherly Love to take a look at the first game of the series between the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies.

Detroit looked abysmal over the weekend in Chicago against the White Sox, only scoring three runs in the whole series. This poor output led to them being swept and sent down to third place in the division in the NL Central. Albeit the bad form though, they still are only 3.5 games back of the Minnesota Twins. This will surely give them a bit of hope that if they can string some quality games together that they can put their names into the hat of teams that can win the division. Nevertheless, the season is still young and the Tigers have over a hundred games left, so there is still plenty of time for the year to go south for them like it has in the past years. On the mound for tonights game, they will have the 25 year old southpaw, Joey Wentz. Over his first eleven appearances in this campaign, he has struggled mightily. Right now, he has a 7.28 ERA with a 1-5 record. If there was a time for him to kickstart his season in the right direction, now would be the ideal time off of a sweep over the weekend for the Tigers.

Over the opening third of the season, the Phillies have been the most disappointing team in the major leagues. After making a shock run to the World Series last year and coming up only two games short of taking it home, they have not been able to find their groove in the first sixty or so games. Whether it be hitters being paid 100+ million dollars that are batting under the Mendoza Line or their two aces having 4+ ERA's, it seems as though they are still hungover from their long Postseason run. But, as Bryce Harper noted in a postgame interview last week, they have to put that in the past and focus on winning games this season, because no one is going to hand anything to them just because on paper they look like they should be better. On the bump for the Phils tonight will be Aaron Nola. If there was one man that perfectly depicts how this team is playing currently, Nola may be the guy we could focus our attention on. After putting together one of his most impressive seasons last year, finishing with a 3.25 ERA, he has not looked himself in his first twelve starts this year. If the Phillies want to turn this season on it's head and make a push for the Playoffs, he will need to fix his mechanics as soon as possible.

Betting trends to consider in this matchup:

- The under is 16-9-1 when the Phillies are coming off of a win

- Philadelphia is 14-10 as the home team

- Detroit is 11-17 as an away underdog

The Phillies have yet to get everyone on the same page so far in the first few months of baseball, but if there was any indication that they have the ability to get things going, look no further than the eight run beatdown that they put together in yesterday's game versus the Washington Nationals. Yes, it was only against the Nationals, but sometimes it only takes one game to flip the season in the right direction. With the Tigers' bats as cold as ever, give me Nola and the Phils to win by at least two in Monday nights opener!
