Saturday afternoon brings us an epic pitching duel when the Tampa Bay Rays face off against the New York Yankees as the Rays look to extend their lead in the AL East to a wider margin.
Tampa Bay has cooled off a bit over the last 10 games compared to the scorching start that they began the season on, going 6-4 in their last 10. In saying that though, they still sit atop the AL East by 4 games and will have the opportunity to further that lead with their ace on the mound on Saturday. Speaking of their ace, Shane McClanahan has seemed to get even better than his first 2 years in the league this season. After going from having a 3.43 ERA in his Rookie season to a 2.54 ERA in his second campaign last year, he is now boasting an absurd 1.76 ERA in his first 8 starts to begin the year off. If the Rays are able to get this much of an effort from him throughout the long 162 game season, he will surely be in the front seat for the Cy Young Award come November when the awards are given out. Can the Rays give him enough run support in New York to take the win?

New York has began the season a bit underwhelmingly. Coming into this one with a 22-18 record, they sit in last place in the AL East (although it is the best division by far through the first 40 games). But, over their last 10 games, they have actually outperformed the Rays, with an impressive 7-3 record. On the bump today, Nestor Cortes will be thrown out there. Currently he has a 4.74 ERA through his first 7 starts to begin the campaign off. On the bright side for Yankees faithful though, in his last start, he did look much better, throwing 5.0 innings and only allowing 2 earned runs. Over the last 2 years, he has finished them off with below 3 ERA's... if he is going to get back to his old ways, a fine showing against a tough division opponent will put him on the right track back to the dominance we know that he can display. With the Yankees looking to get back into the thick of things in the division, can they hand McClanahan and the Rays his first loss of the year?
Betting trends to consider in this matchup:
- The Rays are 28-8 SU as the favorite
- Tampa Bay is 10-5 SU as the road favorite
- The Yankees are only 9-12 SU after coming off of a win
If Cortes is able to assert his dominance early on, we could be in for a very low affair in New York for Saturday afternoon's game. Even if he is able to do that though, with the way McClanahan is pitching at the moment for the Rays, I can not pass up this line. I am going to take the Rays as the short favorite here as I expect the Rays to punch early and never look back en route to a key division win inside Yankee Stadium.
