Let's begin the new week with some interleague play in the MLB, when the New York Mets fly into Houston to take on the Astros for a three-game series.
After Steve Cohen splurged the cash in the offseason, the Mets have come out and not performed well at all over the first seventy or so games to begin this campaign off. Coming in with a 33-38 record, they sit 12.5 games back of the first place Atlanta Braves in the NL East. Furthermore, they are a mere 3-7 in their last ten games, and most recently yesterday lost a heart-breaker in the 9th against the St. Louis Cardinals. Although there is plenty of season left to turn the ship around, they do not want to fall too far behind the bunch of NL teams that are on a roll of late and have to overcome an insurmountable deficit later in the year. On the mound for the Mets for tonight's game will be Max Scherzer. In what feels like the first time in forever, he looks human after all in his sixteenth year in the league. Coming in with a 4.45 ERA, his stats perfectly depict how the Mets season has gone so far. Nonetheless, can Scherzer bounce back from his 3.1 inning outing last time around to start off the road trip on a good note?

Houston has sort of fallen under the radar a bit with the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels playing so well in the AL West. Coming into this series, they have a solid 39-33 record, but have fallen in all four of their last games. Last series they were utterly bombarded on their home field by the high-flying Cincinnati Reds, as they were swept out. Moving towards Monday's game, the Astros will not panic at all as they have been in every situation possible since this bunch has formed to create the powerhouse that they are. On the bump for the 'Stros tonight will be 24 year-old budding star, Hunter Brown. After a stellar short stay in the big leagues in 2022, many in the Astros organization were wondering what was next for Brown in his development. After moving into a complete starting pitching role this time around, he has answered the call whenever the Astros have called upon him. Can he go toe-to-toe with a Hall of Famer and win the pitching duel tonight?
Betting trends to consider in this matchup:
- Houston is 29-24 when playing as the favorite
- The Mets are 3-11 when playing as the road underdog
- New York is 16-23 when playing on the road
In what is gearing up to be an enticing pitching duel in the Space City, I am going to side with the man who has pitched in less than 100 innings in his career versus the man who has amounted over 2,700 innings pitched. Scherzer does not look right and last game it was on full display after he let up 6 earned runs over 3.1 innings pitched against the New York Yankees. Give me the 'Stros to deliver the first punch!
