It was their second consecutive blowout, lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers as they looked lethargic on Sunday night baseball over the weekend as well. San Diego now finds themselves three games below .500 with a record of 55-58 through the first 113 games of the 2023 Major League Baseball season. They are in fourth place of the National League West division at the moment and they are 11 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place. However, if they can manage to get things turned around quickly, they are still within striking distance to grab one of the three wild card spots in the National League as they are only four games out of the third spot at the moment.

Much like their opponents in this series, the Seattle Mariners have been underwhelming this season as well. After two consecutive seasons of 90+ victories in a playoff appearance last year that broke a two decades long drought, they have been a complete disappointment this year. They were expected to be a legitimate contender for the American League West division title, and a potential Darkhorse to bring home the American League pennant as well. However, neither of those things have been anywhere close to true this season as they currently find themselves on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoff race with less than two months remaining in the season. Seattle is in a similar position as they will have to turn things around quickly if they want to have an opportunity to make the playoffs this season.
Although Seattle comes into this game eight games above .500 with 60 victories in their first 112 games of the 2023 Major League Baseball season, they are currently a handful of games behind the third wildcard spot in the American League. That is because the American League East has been the best division in all of baseball this season and two of those teams take up two of the wild card spots. The third wildcard spot belongs to their arch rivals and the defending World Series champions, the Houston Astros. Seattle has been getting hot as of late, which is good for their own sake, as they are currently on a five game winning streak coming into the opening game of this series against the San Diego Padres. It will be looking to keep the momentum rolling here on Tuesday night as they look to overtake Toronto for that third wildcard spot.
