San Diego has started the year off a bit inconsistently. They were able to catch fire against the Braves last series though, stealing three of four games from Atlanta in Truist Park. Now, they will encounter another NL East juggernaut early on, with the hopes of being able to carry over the momentum from the Atlanta series into this one. Newly acquired Nelson Cruz and Xander Bogaerts have kicked the door open and made themselves at home in the first ten games with their new squad, combining for five home runs and seventeen RBIs so far. Heading into a series where they will face elite pitching all series long, the Padres will hope that they can continue to rake in the middle of their lineup. In a season where San Diego will hope that they can keep up with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West, a series like this one against contenders will surely give them a gauge of where they are as a team.

New York was able to get back on the right track in their last series, taking two of three games from the Miami Marlins in their home park. In years past, the Mets may not have had to be as good early on in the season as the NL East may have lacked the firepower to contend with them, but nowadays, the Phillies and Braves are two of the best squads in the MLB. They will have to be alert as ever to not get in a funk in the first half of the season, as it could put them in too big of a hole to bounce back from later on down the line. They will throw Max Scherzer on the mound in the first game against the Padres on Monday night. He has looked off in his first two starts to begin the year, having let up four home runs while only managing to pitch eleven innings. If the Mets want to stay afloat while Justin Verlander is on the Injured List, he will need to get his act together as soon as possible.
