Saturday brings us game two of the series between the New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates, with the Mets looking to get back on the right track after losing seven games in a row.
After spending an exorbitant amount of money in the offseason, the Mets have by and large been the biggest disappointment in the major leagues so far this year. Now having registered a loss for a week straight, they come in to today's game with a 30-34 record, good for second to last in the NL East (4.0 games above the Washington Nationals). At the moment, nothing is going right for them. A perfect representation has been shown of this in the last two days when they pitched terrilbly last night, letting up fourteen runs, and the prior night getting the bats going and putting a ten spot on the board, but their pitching staff letting up thirteen in a gut-punching loss. They are in such a poor rut that it feels as though anything that can possibly go wrong, will go wrong for New York. Nevertheless, can 30 year-old rookie, Kodai Senga, stop the bleeding to end their abysmal run of form to get the train rolling once again?

Pittsburgh continues to prove the doubters wrong, now sitting atop the NL Central above the Milwaukee Brewers who have lost their last two games. Yesterday's game was a superb depiction of how good they can truly be if they can keep it going throughout the long season. Even though they registered seventeen hits and put up two touchdowns on the board, we must spotlight Ke'Bryan Hayes. After struggling for the large part of the early goings this season, Hayes went a stellar 5-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored last night. Surely being the best game of his career up until this point, we shall see if he can continue to rise to the occasion for the surging Pirates. On the bump for Pittsburgh today will be Johan Oviedo. In his last 11.1 innings pitched, he has only allowed three earned runs. Can he lower his ERA for the third game in a row against the hapless Mets?
Betting trends to consider in this matchup:
- Pittsburgh is 22-11 against NL opponents
- The Pirates are 18-14 when coming off of a win
- New York is 15-22 on the road
At this point from a neutral perspective, it is almost laughable how bad the Mets are playing. Anything that can go wrong, does go wrong for them. On the flip side, the mojo is as good as ever for the Pirates who will be playing in their home park. Additionally, although I am not the biggest backer in Oviedo's work, he has looked promising in his last two starts. Give me the Pirates to deliver the eighth straight loss for the snakebitten Mets.
