Thursday brings us a getaway day for the Seattle Mariners when they battle the Philadelphia Phillies inside Citizens Bank Park in the last game of the series.
Seattle has not started the season as well as they would have hoped to. Currently, they sit in the 4th spot in the AL West and will have expectations of improving on that as the regular season progresses. On the bright side, highly touted prospect Jarred Kelenic has lived up to the hype in his 3rd season in the Major Leagues. As of last night's game, he is slashing .342 with 7 home runs, 14 RBIs, and 3 stolen bases. I am not sure if he is finally turning the corner being that the season is still young and he hasn't even reached the 100-at-bat mark of the campaign yet, but the way he is crushing the ball right now will have Mariners fans salivating over the possible future of having Kelenic and Julio Rodriguez in the lineup for the next 10 years. In today's game, the Mariners will throw out 25-year-old George Kirby to face off against the Phillies' daunting lineup. Through his first 4 starts, he has put together a 3.57 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP. But, over his last 3 starts, he has pitched 18.1 innings and has only let up 5 runs. We shall see if Kirby can carry the momentum he has built up into Citizens Bank Park.

The Phillies have played better of late but will be disappointed that they have not been able to find a groove yet through the first 24 games of the season. Reliever converted starting pitcher Matt Strahm will be on the bump for Thursday's game. I am not sure the Phillies had high hopes for him in the starting pitching role this year as he has only been implemented there until Ranger Suarez is back, but he has shattered any doubts that the organization may have had about him opening up games. So far, he has been able to amount 18.0 innings across his first 5 starts, while only letting up 6 earned runs in that span. Even though he has struggled a bit in his last 2 starts, the Phillies could not have asked for a better start to the campaign for him as he fills in the 5th spot in the rotation. On the hitting side of things, Brandon Marsh is one to watch in CF as he looks to build on his scorching start to begin the year.
Betting trends to consider in this matchup:
- The Phillies are 9-6 SU when playing as the favorite
- The under is 7-3 in games where the Phillies have played as the home favorite
- The Mariners are 6-12 SU when playing on no rest
Both squads have certainly gotten off to a slow start to begin the year, but the Phillies have been able to put together dominant innings out of their key bullpen pieces in the last week or so which has been vital to their wins. Jose Alvarado has looked like the best pitcher in the Major Leagues coming out of the pen and I expect him to play a part in this one as the Phillies try to close out the Mariners before they get on a plane and head to Toronto the following day to play against the Blue Jays. Give me the Phillies to win impressively!
