Let's end the weekend on a good note by heading to the Midwest to check out the final game of the series between the Philadelphia Phillies and Cincinnati Reds.
After making a shocking World Series appearance last year, the Phillies have not been able to find their form yet in the young part of the season. Coming into Sunday's game, they are 5-10 on the year, good for 4th in the jam-packed NL East. On the bright side for Phillies fans though, Bryce Harper is already taking live batting practice reps, which means that he has the opportunity to be back in the lineup within the next month if everything goes to plan. Nevertheless, they will need their aces to turn it around as soon as possible, as their first few starts of the year have been awful. Aaron Nola will be on the mound for the 4th game of the series against the Reds, coming in with an 0-2 record and a 7.04 ERA. In a contract year for him, he will look to get back to his old ways as he and the Phillies look to split the series with the Reds.

The Reds made the Phillies look like a minor-league baseball team on Saturday, winning by a shocking score of 13-0. Coming into this game, they will rely on former Yankee reliever, Luis Cessa to keep the Phillies bats quiet once again. Although he has not been at his best to begin the campaign, his recent track record gives me a feeling that he will not be as poor as he has been for too much longer. In Saturday's game, Wil Myers had one of the best games of his career, where he went 4-5 with 5 RBIs and 4 runs scored. Moving on toward Sunday's matchup, he will have a far superior test against one of the premier arms in the National League in Nola. The Reds are not a team that is close to contending yet in the NL Central, but performances like yesterday give a slight glimpse at what the future could potentially be for them as the years go on.
Betting trends to consider in this matchup:
- The Reds are 2-7 as the underdog
- Cincinnati is 3-6 in non-Division games
- The over has hit in 5 out of the last 7 games that the Phillies have played in
Aaron Nola is one of the elite arms in the whole league, so do not expect his 7.04 ERA to stand for much longer. This is as must-win as a game can get in mid-April for a team looking to play for a World Series Title this year, and I expect the Phillies bats to wake up after last night's snooze fest. Nola will shut down this Reds lineup, unlike what he has been able to do for his first 3 starts of the year to help deliver a sizable win for the Phillies before they can head out to Chicago for a series with the White Sox.
