Game Info: Sunday, February 5, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. EST (Spectrum Center)
Betting Odds: Magic (-1) / Over/Under (TBD)
Pick: Magic (-1)
Today we will take a look at a game that will be going on around lunch time this Sunday, when 2 of the 3 bottom feeders of the Eastern Conference face off against one another. This game will be played between the Magic and Hornets in the Spectrum Center in Charlotte.
Orlando has been one of the best teams ATS this season (30-22-1), which is good for 3rd best in the league. Although this doesn't win them an award per se, it does show that their young stars are making improvements as the year has gone by. Just last time out in a game that was overshadowed by punches being thrown on the court, they were able to get a big win on the road in Minnesota as a 5.5 point underdog. As they continue to get their key pieces back, Orlando fans are getting to see glimpses of what their young talents can bring to the organization for years to come. Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner are two guys that they will look to build on for years to come as they both are averaging 20 PPG this year. Head Coach Jamahl Mosley has mentioned in press conferences that he likes the effort his team has been showing of late, and I completely agree with his statements, as they have two great road wins over the T-Wolves and 76ers in their last 3 games played.

I did not expect Charlotte to be good this year with all of the drama surrounding their team, but I was not expecting this in any shape or form. They currently sit last in offensive rating and 27th in defensive ranking across the whole league, and own an abysmal 15-39 record. At times their whole team looks extremely disjointed, which has impacted their ability to win games all season long. Looking on the bright side for them, LaMelo Ball is still putting together good performances on a nightly basis, but he can not do it alone. They will need a ton more from their secondary and third options if they plan on improving over the second half of the season. As the trade deadline approaches upon us, I fully expect them to be sellers in order to gain some assets for future drafts to bolster their team for the upcoming seasons ahead.
A few betting trends to consider in this matchup:
- Orlando is 13-6-1 ATS after a win
- Charlotte is 8-15 ATS as the home team
- The Hornets are 6-11 ATS as a home underdog
- The Magic are 19-12 ATS when playing on equal rest as the opposing team
The Hornets are genuinely one of the worst NBA teams I've seen in years. They have lost their last 3 games by a combined 31 points, and I do not see it stopping here. With Banchero back healthy, and coming off of an impressive win on the road in Minnesota, Orlando will have a good mojo going into this matchup against an inferior opponent. Give me the Magic to get another win away from home as they attempt to gain some momentum as we head towards the All-Star break.
