Betting Odds: Red Sox ML (-120) - Over/Under (9.5)
Pick: Red Sox ML (-120)
Friday evening takes us to one of the most iconic ballparks in all of Major League Baseball. As the New York Mets travel to Fenway Park to open up a three-game series with the Boston Red Sox this weekend. The sports rivalry between the cities of New York, and Boston is as iconic as it gets, and make no mistake about it even though this is the “other” New York team, the Red Sox will still be looking to grab a sweep over the weekend and it starts with game one here on Friday night.
The New York Mets have one of the highest payrolls in all of Major League Baseball this season. However, if you took a glance at the standings in the National League East division, you certainly wouldn’t be able to tell that judging by their record. They have been completely disappointing this season, and they have underwhelmed their expectations by a mile open to this point of the year. They come into the opening game of this series 6 games below .500 and in fourth place in the National League East division. If they don’t turn things around quickly, then they will find themselves sitting on the couch when October comes around, even after all the money they have spent over the past few years on some of the top talents in baseball.
They come into this game with a record of 45-51 through the first 96 games of the season and they are seventeen and a half games behind the Atlanta Braves for the top spot in the division. They have picked up five victories and five losses in their last 10 games on the season and they currently find themselves on a one-game losing streak as well. Kodai Senga is expected to get the start for the New York Mets in the opening game of this series and he comes into this start with a record of 7-5 on the year and an Earned Run Average of 3.20 in seventeen appearances on the season. He has gone at least six innings in both of his last two starts so don’t expect to see much of the Mets bullpen in this one unless the game gets out of hand.

The Boston Red Sox have been pretty solid up until this point of the season. However, they have flown under the radar because of how tough the American League East division has been this year. They currently find themselves sitting in fourth place in the division, despite having a winning record at the moment. As they come into this game five games above .500 with 51 victories in their first 97 games of the 2023 Major League Baseball season. Overall, the Boston Red Sox haven’t been too bad for a team that is still arguably a couple of years away and one big piece away from competing. With the trade deadline quickly approaching all that could change in a matter of moments as they have been rumored to be in the market to trade for Shohei Ohtani.
Boston has picked up a victory in seven out of their last 10 games on the season. However, they are coming off of a series loss against the Oakland Athletics. This puts them on a two-game losing streak entering the opening game of the series on Friday night at home. They will need to bounce back against a much better New York Mets team so they will have to limit the same mistakes they made in the series against the Oakland Athletics and their offense will have to be a bit more productive throughout the weekend. Kutter Crawford is expected to take the mound for Boston in the opening game of the series and he comes into this game with four victories to his name this season.
Betting trends to consider in this matchup:
- New York Is 22-29 away from home this season
- New York is 2-4 with a rest disadvantage
- Boston is 26-22 at Fenway Park this season
With the Boston Red Sox being at home in a bit better form than the New York Mets, I think Boston has the edge in this game. Boston has just found a way to win at Fenway Park this season and I don’t see that changing in the opening game of the series on Friday night. As I look for Kutter Crawford to have a quality start, and for the Red Sox lineup to do just enough to get them a pivotal victory over the New York Mets.
