Betting Odds: Purdue (-7.5) / Over/Under (150.5)
Pick: Iowa (+7.5)
Thursday night brings us a crucial Big Ten matchup between two teams that are in completely different situations at the moment, when the Iowa Hawkeyes go on the road to take on the Purdue Boilermakers in Mackey Arena.
Iowa is currently fighting for their NCAA tournament lives right now. They come into this one with a 15-8 record (7-5 in Conference play), and could secure the biggest win in the country so far this year if they can win this game. They have managed to get in a groove as of late, winning their last 3 games at home against Rutgers, Northwestern, and Illinois. Leading scorer, Kris Murray, has carried the load for the Hawkeyes this season, as he tries to follow in his brothers footsteps to the NBA. He is averaging 20.5 PTS and 8.5 REB per game. Although he is the most talented player on this roster, key contributions from Tony Perkins and Filip Rebraca have allowed this team to catch their stride in the past few games on their win streak. They will need every single player to be ready come tipoff Thursday night, as the atmosphere will be raucous in Mackey Arena.

Purdue stumbled last time out, suffering their 2nd loss of the season on the road to the Indiana Hoosiers. Still, they are 22-2 SU on the year (10-12-2 ATS), and have dominated in almost every game. Superstar center, Zach Edey, has made a tremendous leap this year, and is the biggest reason as to why this team is ranked #1 right now. He is averaging 22.4 PTS and 13.2 REB per game on 62.7% shooting from the field... a truly outstanding stat line. The Toronto man has established himself as one of the most dominant players in recent memory in college basketball with his 7' 4'' frame. As they look to bounce back at home in order to keep their distance on top of the Big Ten standings, Edey will need some support from his teammates, as his 33 points and 18 rebonds were not enough against the Hoosiers.
A few betting trends to consider in this matchup:
- Iowa is 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games played
- Purdue is 4-7-1 ATS as the home team
- The Hawkeyes are 14-9 ATS on the year
- The under has hit in 8 out of 12 games that the Boilermakers have played at home
This line is too steep for my liking. Iowa is on a roll right now, and they are getting big nights from various players on the court. This has allowed for teams to not be able to just zero in on Murray every night. Zach Edey will most likely get his own tonight, but the Hawkeyes are clicking too well on offense at the moment to pass up on such a high number. Give me Iowa to keep it closer than this line suggests on the road.
