Betting Odds: Guardians ML (-105) - Over/Under (8.5)

Pick: Guardians ML (-105)

Thursday evening takes us to the Windy City where these two American League Central division teams will open up a four-game weekend series. Both of these teams have high expectations entering the season, and both of them have been pretty underwhelming up until this point of the year as well. Both Cleveland and Chicago could use a victory in this game as they try to get their season back on track heading down the final stretch of the year.

The Cleveland Guardians come into the opening game of the series with plenty of momentum after winning three consecutive series over the past week and a half. As they took two out of three games from the Philadelphia Phillies, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the Kansas City Royals. They have finally gotten their record back to .500 on the season at 51-51 through the first 102 games of the 2023 Major League Baseball season. In the process, they have chipped away at the Minnesota Twins leading the American League Central division, and they come into the opening game of the series trailing Minnesota by two games for first place. Last year this Cleveland team had a similar path as they got hot during the second half of the season and rode their momentum to come within one game of making the American League Championship Series.

Cleveland’s lineup has been super productive as of late and they will be looking to keep the trend going in the opening game of the series against the Chicago White Sox. While he is not expected to make an appearance during this series, they did trade for some help in the form of Jacob deGrom, as they were in desperate need of some veteran starting pitching coming down the stretch. As they will likely be without both Tristan McKenzie and Shane Bieber for the remainder of the regular season. Players like Bo Naylor and David Fry have emerged as formidable threats at the plate and they can hurt you on any given at bat. While Jose Ramirez is getting going, once again after a weeklong slump and he makes this Guardians team more dangerous than anyone else out on the field.

The Chicago White Sox had plenty of expectations coming into the season, but they haven’t quite lived up to those expectations this year. They are now 20 games below .500 on the season after they lost to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night. Despite being in the worst division in all of Major League Baseball this season, they are well out of the playoff race as well. As they are double-digit games out of first place in the American League Central division coming into this game on Thursday evening at home. They look to be selling at the trade deadline as well as it was recently announced that they are trading away starting pitcher Lucas Giolito to the Los Angeles Angels. That is good news for Cleveland, as Giolito is a guy that has had the Guardians number over the last few seasons.

Chicago comes into this game in perhaps their worst form all season as they are currently on a five-game losing streak and they have lost to seven out of their last 10 games of the year. They will be looking to bounce back in the opening game of the series against Cleveland and the only thing going in their favor might be the fact that Cleveland has struggled to hit away from home at times this season. Dylan Cease is expected to get the start for the Chicago White Sox and he will be going against one of the best young starting pitchers in all of baseball, Tanner Bibee. The pendulum certainly swings in Cleveland's favor when it comes to the pitching matchup because despite Cease’s veteran status compared to Bibee he has looked much worse than the young rookie has the season.

Betting trends to consider in this matchup:

- Chicago is 38-56 with equal rest this season

- Chicago is 21-27 at home this season

- Chicago is 27-33 after a loss this season

I expect the Cleveland Guardians to get the job done in this one as they have been playing at a high-level coming into Thursday night's game. I look for them to put up a crooked number on the board against Dylan Cease, and the Chicago White Sox in the opening game of this four-game weekend series on Thursday night and for Tanner Bibee to grab the sixth victory of his Major League Baseball career.
