Betting Odds: Cubs (-140) / Over/Under (13.5)

Pick: Cubs ML (-140)

Today we are heading out of the country to the London Stadium to take a look at game one of the two game series that the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals will be playing against one another.

Chicago is beginning to heat up once again to stay in the race for the NL Central division as they swept the Pittsburgh Pirates out of their home park in their last series. In that divisional matchup, they outscored the Pirates by a whopping score of 20-3 in the three game combined. As they jump over to Europe for a short stiny against the Cardinals, time will tell if they can carry over that momentum that they built in PNC Park. On the mound for the Cubs in today's game will be the budding star left hander, Justin Steele. Although he did not get much attention from around the league in 2022 when he boasted a 3.18 ERA through 24 starts, he has demanded the attention this time around, as he sits with a 2.71 ERA and a 7-2 record. From year to year, Steele has been able to improve on his previous year's output, which is quite impressive for a man that has only been in the big leagues for three years so far.

St. Louis can not seem to get any sort of rhythm as the year progresses. Now sitting with a 31-44 record, good for last in the NL Central division, every single game is crucial to their chaces at maybe making a comeback in the second half of the season after the All-Star break. If they are not able to do so, who knows who may be traded at the deadline. We have already heard reports of Paul Goldschmidt drawing a massive amount of interest around the league from contending squads, but would the Cards really deal him? Time will tell if the Cardinals are not able to get their act together. Wednesday's game against the Washington Nationals was a perfect depiction of how poor their season has gone, as they were shut out by a score of 3-0. Can the change of scenery bring  a spark to a squad who is playing as though they have already given up on their season?

Betting trends to consider in this matchup:

- The Cubs are 8-1 in their last nine games

- Chicago is 22-17 as the favorite

- St. Louis is 21-31 in division games

The Cubs have been solid baseball of late. They have come up with the big hit when needed, but have also shut it down on the mound when need be as well. In a game where I expect there to be a plethora of run opportunities all game long, I simply can not trust Adam Wainwright anymore. Age has gotten to him this season and I do not see a possibility of him shutting down a Cubs squad who is scorching right now. Give me the Cubs to kick off the London Series with a win!
