Betting Odds: Cubs ML (+105) - Over/Under (8.5)
Pick: Cubs ML (+105)
Monday takes us to Citi Field in Queens, New York as the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets open up a three game series. Both of these teams are heading in very different directions. At this point in the season, as Chicago is making a late season playoff push and New York is coming off of a sale at the trade deadline and trending downward. Both of them will be looking to capture a huge victory in the opening game of this series tonight.
The Chicago Cubs have caught fire coming down the stretch of the season and they are currently in second place of the National League Central division. After their victories this weekend over the Atlanta Braves they have surpassed a struggling Cincinnati Reds team for the second spot in the division. Now, if they continue to play as well as they have throughout the weekend, there is a legitimate chance that they could surpass the Milwaukee Brewers for the top spot in the division. They will be looking to take advantage of a struggling New York Mets team that has been dropping games left and right over the past week and a half.
Chicago comes into the opening game of this series with a record of 58-54 through their first 112 games of the 2023 Major League Baseball season. As previously mentioned, Chicago has benefited from a rough stretch of play from Cincinnati and they have moved into the top two in the National League Central division. They are only a handful of games out of first place behind the Milwaukee Brewers in a season that looked doomed after a few months suddenly has been revitalized as they have an opportunity to make a playoff push down the stretch round of the 2023 season. Drew Smyly gets the start for the Cubs in this game and he has been a dependable starting pitcher throughout the season for Chicago.

The New York Mets had a lot of potential coming into the season but it has all come crashing and burning to the ground as they had a mini firesale coming into the trade deadline. They traded away both of their best starting pitchers, as Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer were both shipped off to the American League and the state of Texas. Verlander made his return to Houston as they are looking to defend their World Series championship and Max Scherzer was sent to Texas as they look to unseat Houston as the king of the American League West division. The New York Mets have lost several games the teams like the Kansas City Royals, which is unacceptable in 2023 as Kansas City is one of the worst teams in baseball this season.
The New York Mets are coming into this game as one of the worst teams in baseball after the trade deadline. They currently have a record of 50-61 through their first 111 games of the 2023 Major League Baseball season. They have lost seven out of their last 21 games on the season and they now find themselves double digit games out of first place in the National League East division. They are still within striking distance in the National League wildcard race as they are only a handful of games out of the third spot and if they turn things around quickly, there is a slim chance I could get themselves back into a playoff position.
Betting trends to consider in this matchup:
- Chicago is 30-27 after a win this season
- Chicago is 11-8 as a road favorite this season
- The Mets are 25-35 after a loss this season
I expect the Chicago Cubs to pick up the victory in the opening game of the series against the New York Mets. Chicago has all the momentum coming into this one and I look for them to exploit that momentum as they look to chase down the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central division. Drew Smyly will likely heavily impact the outcome of this game with a solid performance on the pitching mound against a struggling Mets lineup.
