Game Info: Monday, August 21st, 2023 at 8:10 p.m. EST (Minute Maid Park)
Betting Odds: Astros ML (-135) - Over/Under (9)
Pick: Astros ML (-135)
Monday evening takes us to the home of the defending World Series champions, as the Boston Red Sox travel south to Texas to open up a series with the Houston Astros. Both of these teams are firmly in the playoff hunt in the American League, and both of them will be looking for a massive victory to open up the series on Monday night at Minute Maid Park. As this series could heavily impact the American League wildcard race.
The Boston Red Sox are having a solid season, but they have arguably flown under the radar because of how tough the American League East division has been this year. They currently sit in fourth place of the division and their hopes of winning the division title are very slim at the moment and if they want to make the postseason, they will have to settle for one of the three American League wildcard spots. They are coming off of a successful series against the New York Yankees over the weekend where they took all three games from New York on the road in the Bronx and now they will be looking to carry that momentum over as they continue the road trip down south to Houston to play the defending World Series champions.
The Boston Red Sox come into the opening game of this series with a record of 66-58 through the first 124 games of the 2023 Major League Baseball season. With 38 games left to play in the season Boston currently find themselves on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoff race but they aren’t far off of the third wildcard spot in the American league right now. As they currently find themselves three games behind the Seattle Mariners for the third wildcard spot, and they could potentially play their way into the top three with a solid performance against Houston this week as Houston currently holds onto the second wildcard spot in the American League. Boston has picked up seven victories in their last 10 games on the year and they come into this game on a three game winning streak as well.

The defending World Series champions had a slow start to the season, but they have picked it up as of late. They currently occupy the second wildcard spot in the American League as they lead their American League West division rivals, the Seattle Mariners by a half of a game coming into the opening game of this series. Houston will also be looking to chase down Texas for the top spot in the American League West division coming down the final stretch of the regular season. They are coming off of a rough weekend against the Seattle Mariners and they will be looking to pick up a much-needed victory in the opening game of the series on Monday night at home against the Boston Red Sox.
The Houston Astros come into the opening game of this series with a record of 70-55 through the first 125 games of the 2023 Major League Baseball season. However, they come into this game as losers of three consecutive games, and they will be looking to improve upon their record after they’ve lost six out of their last ten on the year. They will have the advantage in the starting pitching matchup in this game on Monday night, but it should be a great match up between two quality starting pitchers regardless. James Paxton takes the mound for the Boston Red Sox and Cristian Javier takes the mound for the Houston Astros here on Monday night in Houston. Both of these guys are capable of delivering quality performances anytime they get the ball.
Betting trends to consider in this matchup:
- Houston is 33-21 after a loss
- Houston is 30-25 as a home favorite
- Houston is 33-29 at home
I’m going with the defending World Series champions to pick up the victory in this game on Monday night against the Boston Red Sox. As Houston is a very tough team to beat when they were at home and I expect that to continue in this game as they look to continue gaining ground on a struggling Texas Rangers team at the moment. As I look for the Houston Astros to grab the victory, and what should be a solid game between two very capable starting pitchers, but in the end, Cristian Javier taking the mound at home for Houston sets them apart, and that is why I have them grabbing the victory.
