Wednesday Night brings us an AL East battle between the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees, with both squads looking to climb back into the thick of things in the division.
Baltimore is flying in the first 48 games of the season, starting it off 31-17. Now sitting only 3.0 games back of the Tampa Bay Rays for the lead in the AL East, they will try and even the series up with the Yankees 1-1 to force a rubber match tomorrow in Yankees Stadium. On the bump, the Orioles will put out 28 year old Tyler Wells. Up to this point, he boasts a 2.94 ERA on 8 games started, with a 3-1 record. After struggling a bit in his first two seasons with the O’s, he is finally starting to grow into the pitcher that Baltimore was hoping he could be, decreasing his ERA by over a whole run compared to last year. After taking an early lead in the 1st inning last night, they were not able to hold on after letting up 3 runs in the 5th inning, eventually losing in extra innings. Can they get back on the right track tonight?

Well, it all feels like the world isn’t collapsing anymore in New York after opening up the season in a struggling manner. Through an 8-2 burst in the last 10 games, they have reached the 10 games over .500 mark fairly quickly after it felt like 2 weeks ago they were going to have to trade all of their top pieces according to the New York’s media overreaction. For Wednesday’s game, the Yankees will have fan-favorite Nestor Cortes on the mound. He has been one of the biggest disappointments in the MLB so far this season. He comes into the 10th appearance of his campaign with a 5.21 ERA. Even though I am not expecting this poor run of form to continue for him all year long, this is by far the worst he has looked since 2020 when he was with the Seattle Mariners. Coming off of an outing where he only let up 2 earned runs over 6 innings pitched, can Nestor come up with the goods anew?
Betting trends to consider in this matchup:
- Baltimore is 26-14 against AL opponents
- The Orioles are 16-9 when playing away from home
- The under is 13-10 when the Yankees have been a home favorite
When we look at both pitchers who will begin this game for their respective teams, there is a big gap between the 2 pitchers ERA's. Although ERA does not depict exactly how good or bad a pitcher is performing to a tee, a 2.94 ERA vs. 5.21 ERA is a large difference. I have not been a fan of Cortes' game so far this season, and up against a lethal Baltimore offense I expect him to struggle here as well. Give me the O's to distance themselves from the Yankees for a night in the East standings!
