Betting Odds: Braves (-155) / Over/Under (10.5)

Pick: Under 10.5 (-110)

Let's start off the weekend by heading to Great American Ball Park to check out a matchup between two NL teams that are as hot as anyone in the league right now, when the Atlanta Braves face off with the Cincinnati Reds.

Atlanta continues to keep plugging along, seemingly winning games in every way possible. In their last series against the Phillies though, it was their pitching that was fantastic from the start. In the eighteen innings played against Philadelphia, they only allowed three runs. Whether it was the starting pitcher or relievers, they were all in sync. Moving on to this series against the Cincinnati Reds, the Braves will know that their pitching will have a large say in the outcome once again against a squad that is on fire of late. On the mound for the Braves in the opener will be 20 year-old rookie prospect, AJ Smith-Shawver.  Even though pitchers are usually not prepared to come into the league at such a young age, he has looked like a man who has been in the league for 10+ years in his first three appearances made for Atlanta. Heading into Cincy, can Smith Shawver come out and shut down the Reds win streak?

After a mediocre start to the campaign for the Reds, where they were 29-35 and behind several teams in the NL Central division, they have came out of the blue with a stellar eleven game win streak that they do not plan on stopping for anyone. In their last series against the Colorado Rockies inside their home ballpark, they played three tight games, but were able to take all three of them by a combined five runs. The key to the Reds at the moment is their primary relievers showing up in the biggest moments and performing at the best of their abilities. Buck Farmer, Ian Gibaut, and Lucas Sims are just a few that come to mind who have played much better than their career ERA's have shown. On the mound for the Reds tonight will be the 29 year-old right hander, Luke Weaver. He has not pitched well at all this season, but can he get it together against a scorching Braves lineup to give his team a chance to extend their win streak?

Betting trends to consider in this matchup:

- The Reds are 11-0 in their last eleven games

- The under has hit in 3 of the last 5 Braves games

- Cincinnati is 24-15 when coming off of a win

Looking at the pitching duel for tonight's game, you may look at it and see two pitchers who you have no trust in keeping this score down. Nonetheless, this is a high total for two squads that should be able to get five or so innings from their starting pitchers before they hand it off to their respective bullpens, who have been dominant as ever of late. Hold your nose and take the under here as I expect a lower scoring battle on Friday night!
